Getting the Shot: How Photojournalism Works Today
As AI-generated imagery has enabled the mass spreading of misinformation, the role of photojournalists in documenting reality is more crucial than ever. Yet the economic implosion of the media industry means that there are relatively few full-time positions left, even at major news outlets. Amidst this challenging landscape, how are photojournalists adapting to changing technologies, maintaining their careers, and covering the stories that deserve to be covered?
To answer these questions and more, East Bay Yesterday host Liam O’Donoghue will be moderating a panel discussion with several Bay Area photojournalists. Expect to hear an illuminating conversation on the ethics, logistics, and love of taking pictures for a living.
Featuring:Amir Aziz, Bay Nature Documentary Photography Fellow and co-founder of Coyote Media Collective
Charles Russo, SF Gate Senior Editor of Photography & Design
Jane Tyska, East Bay Times/Oakland Tribune photojournalist
This event is part of the closing reception for “Visible Labor: The East Bay at Work,” an exhibition of local photographers on display at Oakland Photo Workshop until May 24, 2026. The exhibition is available for online viewing here.

Wet Plate Collodion
WITH JENNY SAMPSON AT THE EBPCO COMMUNITY DARKROOM
Wet Plate Collodion is a photographic process dating back to the 1800’s that involves hand-coating a metal or glass plate with a viscous, salted collodion then submerging it in silver nitrate. While still wet, the sensitized plate is put in the camera, exposed, and processed immediately following exposure. In this one-day workshop, participants will learn the basics of this historical process, using metal plates to create their own one-of-a-kind tintypes. Participants should be familiar with the basics of large format camera operation before registering. All materials for this workshop are provided by EBPCO.
