This session is open to EBPCO members only. If you don’t have a membership, you can start one HERE. Join us at Oakland Photo Workshop to discuss your photo projects and works in progress. The goals of these in-person sessions are to create a supportive space to give and receive constructive feedback on projects in all areas of photography currently being developed. Participants will also practice speaking about their art as well as the art of others. We also encourage participants in our workshops to attend and share what you made and are working on!

Intro to Cyanotype
WITH BRENNA HANSEN AT THE EBPCO COMMUNITY DARKROOM
Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that uses the sun to produce a cyan blueprint. The process is simple but incredibly diverse, lending itself easily to experimentation. In this one-day workshop, learn both the fundamentals of the process and experimental techniques, producing photograms using natural objects, photographs using digital negatives, and toned & manipulated prints. No previous experience is required, and all materials for this workshop are provided! Participants will be asked to email the images they wish to print in class ahead of time.

Film Processing with Plant-Based Developer

Discover the time-honored technique of developing film negatives with the power of plants! In this one day workshop, participants will be immersed in the magic of alternative photography where art, science, and nature converge by working with developer brews made from California native and non-native plants. Pinhole Photography
WITH CHRISSY HUHN AT THE EBPCO COMMUNITY DARKROOM
Participants will learn how to construct their own pinhole cameras utilizing recycled everyday materials and use silver gelatin paper to create black and white prints directly from the cameras they built. There will also be a brief introduction and overview to traditional darkroom printing - all experience levels are welcome. Participants must bring a their own box or cylindrical canister to construct their camera. All other materials will be provided by EBPCO!

Intro to Digital Imaging with Photoshop
WITH KIMBERLEY CAMPISANO AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP
Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard tool for most digital art, allowing users to manipulate existing images or design them from scratch. Knowing the basics will give any artist a leg up in the art and design worlds. This workshop series will explain how Photoshop’s features differ from Lightroom including interface, workspaces, layers, tools, filters, etc. You can work with your own OR provided files. Participants must bring a laptop computer and either have an Photoshop subscription or be ready to start a temporary one before the class. Links to trial versions of software will be provided.

Darkroom Refresher

This one-day session is designed for those who have had some previous experience in black & white photography, processing, and printing but have been away from it for some time. Wet Plate Collodion
WITH JENNY SAMPSON AT THE EBPCO COMMUNITY DARKROOM
Wet Plate Collodion is a photographic process dating back to the 1800’s that involves hand-coating a metal or glass plate with a viscous, salted collodion then submerging it in silver nitrate. While still wet, the sensitized plate is put in the camera, exposed, and processed immediately following exposure. In this one-day workshop, participants will learn the basics of this historical process, using metal plates to create their own one-of-a-kind tintypes. Participants should be familiar with the basics of large format camera operation before registering. All materials for this workshop are provided by EBPCO.

Intro to 35mm Film Photography

For those who are new to film photography and looking to get started. In this course, an instructor will guide you through the basics of manual camera function and making images with black & white 35mm film, including ISO, aperture, shutter speed, light metering, focus, and more. This workshop will get you making images that can be sent out for processing or prepare you for your own processing work in the darkroom. Participants must bring their own 35mm camera.

This 4 week (5/6-5/27) course is for those who want to begin exploring alternative photography processes. Participants will receive a hands-on introduction to a variety of popular processes, including cyanotype, lumen, and hybrid chemigram printing in this fast-paced survey class. Throughout the course, an instructor will guide you through the foundations of these processes, including chemical safety, DIY setups, digital negative creation, and various options for archiving dynamic printed work. Participants must send in some images they’d like to work with ahead of the class. All other materials for this course are provided by EBPCO!

Printing with Plant-Based Developer

Delve deeper into the world of sustainable developing by making darkroom prints using plant-based developers. In this workshop, participants who have taken a previous plant based film developer workshop will learn to make prints from their negatives, mix chemistry, and observe how their negatives respond to different developers. iPhone Photography
WITH JOP BAYLON AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP
Learn to control your phone camera settings beyond auto and start capturing stunning images exactly the way you’d like them. In this one day workshop, participants will get to know more about their iPhone camera app, use the Photos app to edit photographs, and learn the basic photographic concepts of exposure, composition, lighting, and subject matter. This two-week advanced workshop is reserved for registered users of the EBPCO darkroom who want to take their printing to the next level. You'll learn techniques to work more efficiently and effectively in the darkroom to get consistently good prints with vivid blacks, rich mid-tones, and sparkling highlights! Lumen Printing
WITH BRENNA HANSEN AT THE EBPCO COMMUNITY DARKROOM
Lumen prints are photograms made with the sun. This is a camera-less photography process that combines photographic paper and chemistry traditionally used in a darkroom setting with light and subject matter found outside. The results yielded from this open and experimental process are surprising and dynamic. In this workshop, we’ll introduce this alternative analog process, experiment with a variety of materials, and briefly cover DIY digital methods of presentation and archiving. No previous experience is required and all materials are included.

Lenticular Printing
WITH ZIRU MO AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP
Explore the mechanics behind lenticular technique and create a small 4 x 6 inch print that alters with angle. From understanding the fundamental principles to crafting personalized prints, this workshop will provide participants with the tools necessary to delve into the artistry of lenticular printing. Anthotype Printing

Anthotype is a photographic process that uses the sun along with light sensitive emulsions made from plant matter to create unique prints. Photo Zine Making

In this one day workshop, Jaya will present a variety of zine making techniques, ranging from the more “traditional” to the most unexpected and experimental formats. Luminogram Printing

Luminograms are made by capturing the effects of manipulated light onto photosensitive paper. The results from this commonly overlooked darkroom process are limitless depending on the interventions made during exposure. In this workshop, learn the basics by using DIY modified light sources and experimenting with a variety of production methods, incorporating movement, layering, and intervention with optical components to create one of a kind prints. Chemigram Printing
WITH BRENNA HANSEN AT THE EBPCO COMMUNITY DARKROOM
Chemigrams are made by applying chemicals onto light sensitive photo paper. The results are unique, surprising, and seemingly endless depending on the materials used. In this one day workshop, we’ll experiment with a variety of materials including standard black & white chemistry, oils, waxes, jellies, vinegars, and more to create one of a kind chemigrams and chemilumens. All materials are provided by EBPCO, but participants may choose to bring some of their own photo paper and/or household pantry items to print with if they wish.

Intro to Digital Photography (4-week)
WITH KELLY SULLIVAN AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP
This 4 week course (2/12-3/5) is for those who want to get started with digital photography and photo editing. Participants will learn to operate their digital cameras and receive a hands-on introduction to using Adobe Lightroom to edit their images. Topics covered include image making in manual, importing and exporting image files, and sorting and editing images both in batches as well as individually. Participants must bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera and laptop computer. Participants should either have an Adobe Lightroom subscription or be ready to start a temporary subscription on the first day of class.

Matting & Framing
WITH JENNY SAMPSON & JAN WATTEN AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP
Learn the importance and the basics of framing and presenting your photographic work. This workshop will cover frame styles, colors and sizes; mat colors and borders; mat vs. no mat; glazing options (glass vs. plexi); finishing (hardware/wires, etc.) and how to present your work at portfolio reviews. Cutting windows in mat board will be demonstrated and attendees will have the opportunity to try cutting their own mat windows. Glass cutting can be demonstrated if there is interest and time.

The California Central Valley is a place of beauty and complexity, a land of contrast undergoing rapid changes: a housing frenzy, an alternation of droughts and floods, vibrant yet struggling migrant communities, immense fields, all surrounded by stunning natural beauty. Let’s follow six photographers who explore this land on film, and one artist on ceramics.
Advanced Darkroom Printing (2-Week)

This two-week advanced workshop is reserved for registered users of the EBPCO darkroom who want to take their printing to the next level. You'll learn techniques to work more efficiently and effectively in the darkroom to get consistently good prints with vivid blacks, rich mid-tones, and sparkling highlights! Participants must bring a selection of negatives and darkroom prints made at the EBPCO darkroom to the first class. All other materials for this course are provided by EBPCO!

Intro to Portrait Photography

This one-day workshop will cover the basics of good portrait photography, including lighting, posing, hair, and makeup. Participants will work with a model and basic studio lighting set-ups to create a variety of portraits. This workshop is intended for photographers of all stripes, formats, and experience levels, including digital, film, and phone. Participants should bring their own digital camera, film camera, or camera phone, as well as memory cards, chargers, or film if applicable. Polaroid Manipulation
WITH SAKARA BIRDSONG AT THE EBPCO COMMUNITY DARKROOM
In this one-day workshop, participants will learn methods for manipulating and transferring Polaroid film. This includes transferring an image onto paper or glass and working to create collages out of polaroids with these materials. We’ll also learn how to safely experiment with everyday chemicals found in the pantry to create unconventional polaroid images. Participants are asked to bring a polaroid camera as well as some film (600 or I-type). All other materials are provided by EBPCO.

This session is open to EBPCO members only. If you don’t have a membership, you can start one HERE. Join us at Oakland Photo Workshop to share your photo projects and works in progress! These in-person sessions have proven to provide an engaging and supportive space for sharing constructive feedback on both individual images and more defined projects. Established EBPCO leaders offer fresh perspectives, and, along with like-minded peers, you will gain the experience of speaking about your own art and the art of others. We encourage participants in our workshops to attend and share what you made and are working on!

Bookbinding for Photographers
WITH JULIAYN COLEMAN AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP
In this workshop, participants will make 4 different bookbinding structures and a wrap to house them all. The structures include a one-sheet book, a pamphlet, an accordion, and a stab binding. This workshop is open to all, regardless of prior bookbinding experience, and we'll talk about ways to adapt the structures to include your images! Participants are invited to bring some of their own paper or other potential binding materials to experiment with, though a set of materials will be provided for each participant to work with. Printing with Liquid Emulsion
WITH BRENNA HANSEN AT THE EBPCO COMMUNITY DARKROOM
Push your photographic work into the realm of sculpture! Liquid emulsion is a bottled version of the light sensitive coating normally found on darkroom photo paper. It can be applied to a variety of materials, allowing images to be made on the surface of just about any object. In this workshop, learn the fundamentals by printing enlarged black & white film negatives onto wood, fabric, ceramic, and more. Participants must have previous experience with traditional darkroom enlargement printing and bring their own 35mm black & white negatives to print. All other materials are provided by EBPCO!
