Material as Witness explores the photograph as object, with its own material sensibility and narrative. Objects can trigger powerful emotions and memories, and materials carry their own associations based on tactile properties or cultural significance. The artists in the exhibition engage in image-making, in a truly hands-on sense, to subvert (or amplify) the power attributed to photos as documentary evidence and bearers of truth.
