In Focus celebrates the creativity, diversity, and strength of the photography community in the Bay Area. This open call was juried by Ann Jastrab, Executive Director of The Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, CA and was held in celebration of Oakland Photo Workshop’s five year anniversary. This exhibition brings together 50 artists in the gallery and an additional 30 artists in the expanded online exhibition, highlighting the many ways photography can document, question, connect, and inspire.

What happens when a two-dimensional image escapes the bounds of the frame, the scrapbook, or the screen? Material as Witness explores the photograph as object, with its own material sensibility and narrative. Objects can trigger powerful emotions and memories, and materials carry their own associations based on tactile properties or cultural significance. The artists in the exhibition engage in image-making, in a truly hands-on sense, to subvert (or amplify) the power attributed to photos as documentary evidence and bearers of truth.
