Meet the Artists
Joanna Malpica
Joanna Malpica is a Chamoru photographer based in the Bay Area, California. Photography has bounced in and out of her life. From the AA battery powered Canon and Nikon point and shoots in her teens to making a big purchase of a Canon Rebel T6 and signing up for an Intro to Photography class at the Honolulu Museum of Art in her mid-20s, making photos and thinking of them is an ongoing journey. By reintroducing photography back into her life she felt drawn to street photos and taking photos of anything around her day-to-day life. Through this she experimented with 35mm film photography, met up with people in the local photography community in the Bay, and is now completely enamored with portraiture. She is currently seeking to explore identity based artwork through self-portraiture honoring her elders, Chamoru culture and history alongside connecting with Asian Pacific Islander creatives in the Bay through her API in the Bay Photo Project.
From the artist:
My portraits are primarily outside on the city streets, in nature and parks, or familiar environments. I'm drawn to the outside for its often unpredictable nature and how immersed the person looks in any given location. My hope is that in exchange for the person's vulnerability in front of my lens they can receive photos that they will love and enjoy. It's not an easy task being in front of the camera and I always aim to make the experience fun, comfortable, collaborative and artful.

Jaime Schultz is a photographer currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has a BFA in Photography from The School of Visual Arts in New York City. For over ten years Jaime has been dedicated to photographing musicians on stage and in their environment. She also loves photographing fashion stories and weddings. Discovering new things to photograph is always a fun experience and she loves working with new people. When she’s not taking photos, she spends her time volunteering at her local SPCA, cooking, spending time with friends and family, and hanging out with her two cats, Cleo and Spike.

Marcus Valderrama
My name is Marcus Valderrama and I’m an artist from San Jose, CA, currently residing in San Francisco, CA. I have been taking pictures for over 15 years.
I am a multifaceted artist working in photography and painting. My work focuses on everyday life, often through the lens of living in the Bay Area. My work is rooted in this region's rich artistic tradition, and I aim to carry that legacy forward for the next generation.
I primarily shoot on film, drawn to its tactile nature and the depth it brings to storytelling. My commitment to the community extends beyond my work, as seen in my involvement with @baeareafilm. Through my photography, I hope to highlight the beauty in the every day, inviting viewers to see the world with fresh eyes.
For the foreseeable future, my photography will remain in black and white. I find myself increasingly drawn to the nuances of contrast and tone—not just visually, but as a reflection of society itself, where everything exists in shades of grey.
